Gov. Kate Brown announced on Tuesday the state will expand vaccine eligibility to all Oregonians over the age of 16 starting April 19, matching the timeline proposed by President Joe Biden.

SALEM, Ore. — KDVR Governor Kate Brown announced on Tuesday the state will expand vaccine eligibility to all Oregonians over the age of 16 starting April 19, matching the timeline proposed by President Joe Biden.

Previously, eligibility for all adults was scheduled to open on May 1.

“We are locked in a race between vaccine distribution and the rapid spread of COVID-19 variants,” Brown said in a news release. “Today, Oregon will pass the threshold of 2 million vaccine doses administered. And yet, in communities across Oregon, COVID-19 is spreading at concerning rates. We must move as quickly as possible to get more shots in arms.”

The announcement comes on the same day President Joe Biden is expected to announce he is moving up the federal deadline for states to make all American adults eligible to April 19.

Also on Tuesday, the governor’s office and the Oregon Health Authority will announce county risk level movements based on the continued spread of COVID-19 in Oregon communities.
