Let's be clear: Donald Trump's executive order is not a solution to the humanitarian crisis at the southern border. Some children will still be torn from their parent's arms and locked in cages, families seeking asylum and refuge can be imprisoned indefinitely, and the 2,300 children who have already been ripped apart from their families are still lost, alone, and without a path forward for reunification. It's unconscionable.
But thanks to powerful public outcry from people of conscience like you, the Trump administration is feeling the pressure and looking for ways out. We have momentum—and we can't stop until the administration backs down completely.
That's why Daily Kos, alongside a wide coalition, will take to the streets on Saturday, June 30. There are already hundreds of events planned across the country. Join us in saying that families belong together—and free.
It's been days of one soul-shattering story after another, after another, after another. And through it all, Daily Kos member have shown up—donating more than half a million dollars, writing and calling Congress relentlessly, and taking to social media to organize family and friends. We are NOT powerless.
There is no law forcing Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, or Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen's hand. They are deliberating choosing to leverage the well-being of infants, toddlers, and children in order to gain concessions from Democrats and pass anti-immigrant legislation. It's a cynical, indefensible political strategy. Trump, Sessions, and Nielsen have the ability to end this national nightmare. We can't let them off the hook.
That's why our fight to defend immigrants and refugees must continue. And our outrage cannot subside. Even Republicans who have supported previous anti-immigrant proposals are backtracking. As long as we continue showing up, we can stop the worst impulses of this administration. Together, we are powerful.
