FOOD ANGELS IN THE HOLIDAYS AND NEW YEAR
Traditionally, the Ashland Food Angels only close on one day of the year – Christmas. That’s the one day that the stores are closed and there is nothing to pick up, although we have for many years picked up the left overs from the community Christmas dinner and transported them to the Gospel Mission in Medford. All other holidays we work as usual, picking up food, boxing it and getting it to the Food Bank or other locations. We donate to the Food Bank seven days a week, as we collect food from our major donators each day.
Our schedule of donations fluctuates somewhat, depending on holidays, as we donate regularly to Head Start and other school groups and need to redirect that when the schools are closed. We donate each week to the two biggest community meals – Uncle Food’s Diner on Tuesdays at the Methodist Church and the Friday community meal at the Pioneer Hall. These do not close down for holidays. During the winter, we contribute to the winter shelters by passing food on to the folks at Pioneer Hall for the Tuesday overnight.
Looking ahead to the New Year, there will be changes coming to Food Angels, though we are still clarifying. As founder and director, I have managed this project for over 22 years, working often daily as both an operations director and long range vision manager. I am wanting to give my time and energies in other directions now and would like to find other people who would be interested in being part of this worthwhile community project and committed to seeing that it continue into the years to come. There is no pay involved and the hours are somewhat flexible. The need here is for people who have four to six hours of available time per week, who are healthy and strong and good at organizing, who enjoy supporting their community and especially appreciate creating viable solutions so that valuable resources, such as food and clothing, do not go to waste. If you are interested, please email: firstname.lastname@example.org with some information about yourself and/or questions.
In this New Year, let us all hold the thought: May All be Fed, May All have Warm Shelter, and may we work together as a community.
with blessings, Pamala Joy
